Pilbara Energy Transition Aboriginal Working Group
The Pilbara Energy Transition Aboriginal Working Group (PETAWG) was created to understand the voices, perspectives and priorities of Traditional Owners and their communities as the PET Plan progresses, and WA moves toward a cleaner energy future. Participation in the PETAWG is open to all Prescribed Bodies Corporate in the areas covered by the existing NWIS and surrounding areas.

Aboriginal Participation in the Pilbara Energy Transition
Transitioning the Pilbara region away from fossil fuels to a system underpinned by renewables is a massive task. So, in 2023 the State Government approved the Pilbara Energy Transition (PET) and a work program – the PET Plan – to guide the renewable energy transition in the region. The PET Plan has several key work streams, including network modelling, common use transmission, regulatory evolution, land tenure and Aboriginal participation. The Aboriginal Participation work stream was established in recognition of the rights of Traditional Owners and the once-in-a-generation opportunity to participate in and realise lasting benefits from the energy transition.
The State Government is committed to making sure that Traditional Owners and Aboriginal communities in the Pilbara can participate in the energy transition with the tools and knowledge they need to shape their future and realise real benefits. The PETAWG helps facilitate this by providing a forum for Traditional Owners to share their perspectives and communicate their priorities as the region shifts to renewables.
Who is involved in the Working Group?
There are more than 30 Native Title holders, or claim groups, across the Pilbara Energy Transition Plan footprint, covering a vast range of Country, communities, and cultures. Participation in the Pilbara Energy Transition Aboriginal Working Group is open to all Prescribed Body Corporates (PBC) within the existing Northwest Interconnected System (NWIS) footprint and surrounds:
