Affordable Low Emissions Energy

There are world-class energy resources spread right across our State: strong winds, bright sunlight and an abundance of natural gas. This means that renewable energy, supported by flexible gas generation and energy storage, is the best path forward for Western Australia.

By fully unlocking these resources, we can keep electricity affordable while powering the new industries we need to grow a more diverse and resilient economy.

Affordable for today - and tomorrow

Keeping our energy affordable is one of the major drivers behind our transition to renewables. Coal generation is becoming more expensive and less reliable as power plants age and using diesel generation in our remote and regional communities is costly because of transport, logistics and maintenance. We know from research by Australia's national science agency, the CSIRO, that wind and solar are the cheapest types of new electricity generation for WA.

Modern and efficient electricity systems

We are modernising our electricity systems, making them more efficient so they deliver energy that is reliable, sustainable and affordable. As part of this, we are expanding access to low operating-cost renewables across the State and modernising the Wholesale Electricity Market in the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). These reforms mean the lowest-cost energy is dispatched first, keeping costs down as our systems evolve.

Infrastructure for the future

We are strengthening transmission links right across WA so that new renewable energy projects can connect and power our homes, communities and businesses. Western Power’s Clean Energy Link program is unlocking more renewables on the SWIS, while the Pilbara Energy Transition Plan will connect some of our most important industries to new wind and solar resources. This infrastructure is large-scale and built with our long-term needs in mind - meaning it will deliver for WA today and for decades to come.

Immediate support for WA households

While we build the infrastructure of tomorrow, the State Government is fully committed to easing cost-of-living pressures today. Through the Household Electricity Credit and partnerships with the Commonwealth Government, we are delivering direct bill relief to eligible Western Australian households.

Smarter home energy

The WA Household Battery Scheme offers eligible WA households generous rebates and interest-free loans to support the installation of household batteries right across the State. By using their battery to store rooftop solar for evening use and joining a Virtual Power Plant, households can cut their bills by up to $560 annually. It’s a win-win: direct savings for WA households and enhanced grid security.

Tackling energy-related financial hardship

The State Government’s $13 million Energy Ahead program is helping Western Australians experiencing financial stress take control of their electricity bills. The hands-on initiative will support up to 10,000 households through free coaching, personalised energy advice, and the replacement of low-efficiency appliances. By teaching smarter energy habits and upgrading old, inefficient equipment, we’re helping households lower their costs and build a more sustainable future.
