What’s happening at Kalgoorlie?

The Kalgoorlie Vanadium Battery Energy Storage System (VBESS) is a renewable energy project planned for our Goldfields-Esperance region. This project, overseen by the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification (DEED), will be Australia’s largest vanadium flow battery and will catalyse the development of a local supply chain in Western Australia.

Located in Kalgoorlie, its 10-hour storage capacity will provide essential backup power for the whole region. By capturing excess solar and wind power during the day, it ensures that even during extreme weather, local homes and businesses will have reliable and secure low emissions power supplies.

The State Government has committed $150 million toward supporting the project as part of a suite of measures to support cleaner, more reliable energy in the Goldfields.

location

Location

The final site for the VBESS has not been chosen. However, the project will be connected to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) near Kalgoorlie.

This will ensure the VBESS is best positioned to support a stronger, more secure and more reliable energy for the Goldfields.

community

Community Benefits

The project will strengthen the Goldfields' role in our State’s cleaner energy future, enhancing reliability to support the community and growth in local industries like mining and critical mineral processing.

The project is designed to support the development of WA’s emerging battery manufacturing and vanadium mining sectors.

Project Status

The State Government launched the first stage of an Expression of Interest (EOI) process for the project in November 2025, with the process closing on 30 January 2026.

Stage One of the EOI focused on identifying existing market capabilities to deliver the battery and local supply chain outcomes.

The second stage of the EOI process will occur later 2026, with the State Government aiming to complete the project in 2029.

Powering WA for Decades

The VBESS will be built to last - vanadium-based batteries are uniquely suited to the harsh and hot WA climate. This means that the VBESS will, once operational, provide reliable energy storage for the Kalgoorlie and Goldfields community for decades to come.
