We're building a State of Energy in Western Australia

Western Australia’s growing economy, changing climate and decarbonisation goals mean we need smarter energy systems right across our State. That’s why we are retiring coal and building a low emissions energy future using wind, solar, gas and batteries.

40% Of energy used on the South West Interconnected System was renewable between 26/03/2026 to 01/04/2026

This transition is already happening all around us.

We’re building a State of Energy for WA - and a stronger, more prosperous future for all Western Australians.

The State Government is committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Meeting this commitment means embracing renewable energy and transforming WA’s generation, storage and transmission infrastructure. That’s why PoweringWA is working to modernise and decarbonise our electricity systems while keeping energy reliable, affordable and sustainable for all Western Australians.

More low emissions energy

Cleaner, smarter energy will help us meet our decarbonisation commitments and power a stronger economy for our State. To realise this vision, we are committed to making sure our electricity is reliable, affordable and sustainable - right across WA, for generations to come.

More sustainable energy

The State Government has committed to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050 - and to achieve this we're decarbonising our energy systems. This means generating more electricity using renewables like solar and wind, while phasing out fossil fuels like coal.

What’s driving our energy transition?

Modernising our energy systems will keep electricity reliable and affordable as our growing economy and population drive increasing demand.

Rising demand for energy

Our major industries are expanding and new sectors are creating fresh opportunities across the State. At the same time, our summers are getting hotter and extreme weather is becoming more common - meaning we are using more electricity than ever before.

PoweringWA is already working to upgrade, modernise and decarbonise our electricity systems so they can meet the needs of our growing State, while keeping energy reliable, affordable and sustainable for all Western Australians.

A smarter energy mix for WA

Independent modelling by Australia's national science agency, the CSIRO, shows that the most reliable and cost-effective way to power WA is with a mix of wind and solar energy, supported by batteries and flexible gas generation when we need it.

By generating more from renewables, alongside flexible gas generation, energy storage and new transmission infrastructure, we can reduce emissions while powering our growth.

Our Energy Systems

Our energy systems are unique in Australia. In addition to over 150 small off-grid systems, WA has two major electricity systems. Both are extremely geographically isolated. And, unlike the other states and territories, none of these systems connect to the national Australian energy grid.

Projects and Initiatives

WA is undergoing a generational shift in how energy is generated, transported, and used. The State Government is delivering several key projects and initiatives across the State, including the Goldfields Regional Network, the Pilbara Energy Transition Plan, the Clean Energy Link transmission projects, and the WA Residential Battery Scheme.
