What’s happening at Baru Marnda?

Project Baru Marnda is a renewable energy project planned for the Pilbara region in Western Australia. The project is being developed by the Yindjibarndi Energy Corporation (YEC) and will potentially combine around 1,050 megawatt of solar and wind generation. There is also an option for a co-located battery energy storage system to store and release excess energy when it is needed.

According to YEC, this project will play a critical role in decarbonising mining and heavy industry operations in the Pilbara, while also creating new opportunities for regional development and delivering real benefits for Traditional Owners. It has been awarded Strategic Project Status by the State Government under the Lead Agency Framework and will receive ongoing support from the Department of Energy and Economic Diversification.

Community benefits

The YEC model centres on shared equity and leadership, with the Yindjibarndi people holding a guaranteed equity stake of between 25 to 50% in all projects and maintaining final approval over all site locations.

Partnerships with Yindjibarndi-owned businesses and ongoing community engagement will help build skills and strengthen the Pilbara role in our State’s clean energy future as one of Australia’s largest Aboriginal-led renewable energy initiatives.

Project status

In December 2025, the project was granted Strategic Project Status under the State Government’s Lead Agency Framework - a designation reserved for projects of significant economic and social importance to Western Australia. This is complemented by its inclusion on the National Renewable Energy Priority List and will ensure coordinated regulatory support from both State and Commonwealth Governments as the project progresses.
